Linux Engineer- Chicago, Direct, 5420

Unix Linux Engineer

Basically, we have a complex RHEL and Solaris environment – 100+ boxes of all flavors, Solaris 8 9 and 10 and RHEL 4. These act as the foundation infrastructure, ORACLE servers, and some app servers. We have a complex jumpstart and kickstart infrastructure for building machines, we use Veritas extensively and also have Veritas Volume Replication in place in addition to a bunch of Netapps, we use QIP for DNS/DHCP, and authentication is using LDAP to Windows AD servers so it’s a single-signon environment. We use Nagios, RTG, bunch of web servers, you name it.

We have a ton of stuff that needs various maintenance. We can define the maintenance that needs to be done, and they are relatively self-contained tasks. But this isn’t at all “we need some boxes built” or “please help some users” – this is “move these web services over to this new box using Solaris 10 zones” or “convert TACACS server to use new LDAP authentication scheme” or “convert all scripts to use new password-encryption scheme” or “modify NIS mgmt GUI to use new ACL scheme” or “recreate patch rollout mechanism”.
This is senior level work and I have a lot of it.

Solaris and Red Hat experience
- Very strong in Unix core concepts, design, ability to figure out the best way to do things up based on experience and knowledge
- Some scripting skills (shell scripting, maybe Perl or other)
- Professional, consultant type appearance and character
- Energetic type of person, team player
- Additional skills in one of the following: Microsoft, networking (Cisco), or Storage (EMC, NetApp, HP), or security would be a plus. Strong database skills would be interesting too.
